MFL
Intent
The intention of the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) curriculum at Milby Primary School is that children will be taught to develop a genuine interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. We use the Language Angels scheme of work and resources to offer a relevant, broad, dynamic and ambitious foreign languages curriculum which will inspire and excite our pupils, using a wide variety of topics and themes. We aim to encourage the children's confidence and resilience through the teaching of French, as we embed the five key strands of foreign language learning: reading, writing, speaking, listening and intercultural understanding, which are necessary to enable children to use and apply their French learning in a variety of contexts.
Laying the foundations for future language learning is a crucial element of MFL at Milby Primary School. Our ultimate aim is that pupils will feel both eager and able to continue studying languages beyond the primary phase of their education, and indeed work towards becoming life-long language learners.
Learning French will also offer pupils the opportunity to simultaneously develop a curiosity in, and deeper understanding of, the world around them, with a better awareness of self, others and cultural differences. Pupils will grow their role in promoting and modelling internationalism.
