Reading and phonics
At Milby we use a range of schemes and resources to teach children phonics and reading.
For phonics, we follow the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme from when children enter school in reception.
Our main reading scheme is Oxford Reading Tree - you may know the key characters of Biff, Chip and Kipper! These are usually the books that children bring home to share and practise at home. However, we do encourage children to read a wide variety of books and your child may also be given other books to read at home. Children are also allowed to choose a book from our well-stocked library and each class has 'library time' each week to exchange library books.
Children also practise reading skills in class during 'shared reading' lessons. We use the Rigby Navigator books along with a wide range of other published materials as well as leaflets, posters, information guides - almost any appropriate reading material.
If you would like to know more about any of the schemes we use or how we teach reading and phonics, please speak to your child's teacher. Below is a link to the 'Oxford Owls' website where you can find over 250 free e-books to read and enjoy with your child.
