Maths
Intent
Here at Milby, maths is taught through a broad and balanced curriculum where children are equipped with the knowledge and skills they will need for their future in an ever-changing world. Children embark on a journey of deep understanding across all areas of mathematics and develop a resilience and growth mindset through their daily learning, ensuring they know more, remember more and can do more. To provide a solid grounding in the basics of mathematics, we follow the statutory requirements of the key stage one and key stage two national curriculum for mathematics; we do this through the use of White Rose resources, supplementing with additional resources (including from NRICH and NCETM) to scaffold and support, or challenge and extend learning. At Milby, we achieve this through daily lessons that will develop the children’s fluency in all areas of maths, provide them with opportunities to reason mathematically and also develop the children’s using and applying skills when solving increasingly complex problems. Fostering positive learning behaviours such as communication and collaboration are vital in encouraging our pupils to access higher-level thinking skills and are therefore given opportunities to explain, reason and justify within lessons. Within maths, the children at Milby develop positive relationships in order to seek support when needed; mistakes are encouraged and seen as opportunities for growth and personal development. At Milby, we passionately believe that every child can achieve in their learning journey and support all children in becoming curious, confident and creative mathematicians.
