Reading and Phonics

Intent

At Milby Primary School, we want to nourish a love of reading in each and every child. Children are taught to decode fluently through our systematic synthetic programme (Bug Club) and build up their foundational knowledge of language through a literature rich environment. The reading curriculum enables pupils to read increasingly complex and whole texts and develops pupils’ reading accuracy, automaticity and prosody. Woven through our literature rich curriculum is the importance of high quality spoken language to embed children’s linguistic knowledge and develop their knowledge of the world around them. Time is given to children reading a lot of text across the curriculum to increase fluency and rehearse and embed explicit comprehension strategies. Children are encouraged to read for pleasure while ensuring they become accomplished readers as soon as possible. Unlocking and developing children’s reading skills is the key to accessing the rest of the curriculum and being successful life-long learners.

Phonics - Bug Club

At Milby we use the systematic phonics programme 'Bug Club' by Pearson Education. Years Reception - 2 receive daily phonics sessions using interactive Bug Club resources and texts. The programme also provides Guided Reading group texts to rehearse and embed reading reading strategies linked to curriculum domains.
