Design and Technology
Intent
At Milby, our children are designers and technologists! It is our intention that the design and technology curriculum will provide opportunities to solve problems that are real and relevant, allowing our children to develop essential skills and unleash their potential to be the innovators and designers of the future. We want our children to have no limits to their ambitions and aspire to be architects, designers, engineers and food nutritionists.
We use the Projects on a page scheme of work, which was created by the Design and Technology Association to enable schools to implement the Design and Technology curriculum in an imaginative way. The use of Projects on a page encourages and supports children to work independently and as part of a team to think creatively, solve problems, develop resilience and a growth mindset. We want our children to stretch themselves in terms of designing and making, whilst having a good understanding of how to identify and manage risks.
Throughout their time at Milby, children will have opportunities to participate in trips and listen to talks from inspirational local people to not only deepen their knowledge and understanding of spiritual, cultural, historical and contemporary life in Britain, but to develop an appreciation of past designs and how these are influencing future designers and technologists. We want to equip our children with a sense of their place in the world by exploring and investigating issues that affect communities within the UK and abroad, such as poverty and famine, and train them with the food and nutritional skills to allow them to make healthy, sustainable choices.
